The best IITM BS Foundation end term PYQ strategy is simple: practise the topics that carry most of the marks first. On BTechi you can sit 39 Foundation End Term papers (December 2024, April 2025 and August 2025), each with its official answer key, and each one can be downloaded as a free end term PYQ PDF. We tagged every question by topic. The data is clear. In Maths 2, two calculus topics carry 38% of End Term questions. In Stats 2, hypothesis testing and estimation carry 64%. In Maths 1 and Stats 1, the End Term is mostly about the weeks after the qualifier.
This guide shows those numbers course by course. It then links you to the exact papers, topic sheets and most repeated sheets, so you can start practising straight away.
If you are still at the qualifier stage, read our IITM BS qualifier exam guide first. For the full picture of the programme, see the complete guide to the IIT Madras BS degree.
How the End Term fits into a Foundation term#
Every Foundation course has the same rhythm. There are weekly assignments, then Quiz 1, then Quiz 2, and finally the End Term exam. The End Term covers the full course, all 12 weeks. Quizzes cover only part of it.
The exact grading formula is different for each course. It is published on each course page on the official site. Check it for your courses on the IIT Madras BS academics page before you plan your marks.
How End Term papers are named#
Paper names on BTechi use the exam month, not the term name. This confuses many students, so here is the mapping:
Most End Term exams have two sessions on the same day: forenoon (FN) and afternoon (AN). The two sessions often share question patterns. So when a question type appears "twice", it is often once in FN and once in AN.
IITM BS Foundation End Term PYQ at a glance#
BTechi has 72 Foundation papers in total. Of these, 39 are End Term papers. The table shows what each course has, and where the questions concentrate.
We counted only questions from End Term papers here. Quiz questions are left out, so these numbers are smaller than the totals on each course page.
Maths 2 End Term PYQ: calculus carries the paper#
Mathematics for Data Science II has two halves: linear algebra, then multivariable calculus. You might expect an even split. The End Term papers say otherwise.
The first two topics alone give 72 of 190 questions. That is 38%. If you are short on time, master gradients, directional derivatives and the Hessian test first.
The most repeated Maths 2 question types in End Terms:
- Use the Hessian test to classify a critical point (6 times).
- Find the range of f on a given domain (5 times).
- Write the squared distance from a point to a graph, then find the minimum distance (4 times each).
- Find the foot of the perpendicular from a point to a line (3 times).
All of these are collected in the Maths 2 most repeated questions sheet.
Solved example 1 (End Term, Apr 2025 AN). Let A and B be 4 × 4 real matrices with A² = 2I and B² = 3I. If det(A) < 0 and det(B) > 0, find det(AB).
- det(A²) = det(A)² and det(2I) = 2⁴ = 16. So det(A)² = 16 and det(A) = −4 (it is negative).
- det(B)² = det(3I) = 3⁴ = 81. So det(B) = 9.
- det(AB) = det(A) × det(B) = −36.
The trap is writing det(2I) = 2. For an n × n matrix, det(kI) = kⁿ.
Solved example 2 (End Term, Apr 2025 AN). Let A = [[7, 3], [4, 3]]. Find det(A⁶ − A⁵).
- Factor first: A⁶ − A⁵ = A⁵(A − I).
- A − I = [[6, 3], [4, 2]]. Its determinant is 6 × 2 − 3 × 4 = 0.
- So det(A⁶ − A⁵) = det(A)⁵ × 0 = 0.
Do not compute A⁶. Factor, and the question takes 30 seconds. Practise this paper in full: Maths 2 End Term April 2025 afternoon with answer key.
All Maths 2 End Term papers: Aug 2025 FN, Aug 2025 AN, Apr 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN, Dec 2024 FN and Dec 2024 AN. For the mid-term exams, see the Maths 2 Quiz 1 Oct 2025 paper and the Maths 2 Quiz 2 Aug 2025 paper.
Stats 2 End Term PYQ: inference is most of the paper#
Statistics for Data Science II starts with joint distributions and ends with estimation and testing. Quizzes test the first half. The End Term leans hard on the second half.
Hypothesis testing, Bayesian estimation and MoM/MLE give 53 of 83 End Term questions. That is 64%. Interesting detail: Markov, Chebyshev, MGF and CLT questions appear in BTechi's Stats 2 quizzes, but zero times in its End Term papers. Learn them for the quizzes, but do not spend your last End Term week there.
Most repeated Stats 2 End Term types: method of moments estimate from a sample (5 times), MLE of θ from a sample (4), Beta posterior of a proportion p (4), bias, variance and consistency of estimators (4), and stating H₀ and H₁ for a claim about a mean (4). They are all in the Stats 2 most repeated sheet.
Solved example 3 (End Term, Apr 2025 FN). A software company collects 200 bug reports. 50 are critical. It uses a Beta(1.4, b) prior for p, the chance that a report is critical. The prior mean of p should be 0.2. Find b, then the posterior.
- The mean of Beta(α, β) is α / (α + β). So 1.4 / (1.4 + b) = 0.2, which gives 1.4 + b = 7 and b = 5.6.
- Posterior = Beta(α + successes, β + failures) = Beta(1.4 + 50, 5.6 + 150) = Beta(51.4, 155.6).
The common mistake is adding 200 (all reports) to β. Only the 150 non-critical reports go to β. Try the full paper: Stats 2 End Term April 2025 forenoon with answer key.
All Stats 2 End Term papers: Aug 2025 FN, Apr 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN, Dec 2024 FN and Dec 2024 AN. Quizzes: Stats 2 Quiz 1 Oct 2025 and Stats 2 Quiz 2 Aug 2025.
Python End Term PYQ: tracing code, every topic#
Programming in Python is different. No single topic dominates. The 114 tagged End Term questions are spread across all 12 topics. The top four are:
Even the smallest topic, exception handling, has 4 questions. So you cannot skip any week. What connects them is one skill: tracing code by hand and predicting the output exactly.
Most repeated Python End Term types:
- Trace a function on a target and a list: first output, True or False (9 times, as linked sub-questions).
- Count the lines in a file after a series of writes (6 times).
- Trace try/except/finally to find the final result (4 times).
- Predict the output when a subclass overrides a parent method (4 times).
- Pick the snippets that build a list of squares or cubes of even or odd numbers (4 times).
Practise them in the Python most repeated questions sheet.
Solved example 4 (End Term, Aug 2025 FN). Which statements are true about this code? (Select all that apply.)
def safe_divide(x, y):
result = []
try:
result.append("Trying division")
result.append(x // y)
except ZeroDivisionError:
result.append("Division by zero")
else:
result.append("No exception occurred")
finally:
result.append("Cleanup done")
return result
print(safe_divide(10, 0))Trace it line by line:
- "Trying division" is appended first.
10 // 0raises ZeroDivisionError, so nothing is appended for the division.- The
exceptblock runs and appends "Division by zero". - The
elseblock runs only when there is no exception, so it is skipped. finallyalways runs and appends "Cleanup done".
Output: ['Trying division', 'Division by zero', 'Cleanup done']. True statements: the output has "Trying division", it has "Division by zero", and "Cleanup done" always appears. The division result is not in the output.

English 2 End Term PYQ: reading plus five patterns#
The English 2 End Term papers on BTechi have 60 single-correct questions each. Across 4 papers, that is 240 questions. One fifth is reading comprehension.
English 2 repeats question formats more than any other Foundation course. In End Terms we see:
- Fill paragraph blanks with the correct form of one root word (15 times).
- Match prefixes and suffixes to their meaning (13 times).
- Pick the most appropriate sentence for a social context (10 times).
- Fill conversation blanks with the most tone-appropriate expression (10 times).
- Match number and quantity phrases to blanks in a news excerpt (10 times).
- Deduce the interviewer's question from the candidate's answer (8 times).
Because the format repeats, practice gives a direct return. Use the English 2 most repeated sheet. Full papers: English 2 End Term Aug 2025 FN, Aug 2025 AN, Apr 2025 AN and Dec 2024 AN.
Maths 1, Stats 1 and English 1 End Terms: not the qualifier again#
Many students clear the qualifier and think the first-term End Terms will feel the same. They do not. The qualifier covers weeks 1 to 4. The End Term covers all 12 weeks, and the data shows it focuses on the later weeks.
Maths 1 End Term#
Of 67 tagged End Term questions, calculus and graph theory give 54 (81%). The six qualifier-week topics (sets, relations, lines, best-fit lines, quadratics and polynomials) give only 8.
"Find critical points and local maxima/minima" appears 6 times, all in End Terms. Papers: Maths 1 End Term Aug 2025 FN, Apr 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN and Dec 2024 FN. The Maths 1 most repeated sheet mixes qualifier and End Term types.
Stats 1 End Term#
Probability topics give 77 of 99 End Term questions (78%). Descriptive statistics, the main qualifier content, give 22.
"Find E[g(X)] from a given distribution" appears 5 times, all in End Terms. Papers: Stats 1 End Term Aug 2025 FN, Aug 2025 AN, Apr 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN, Dec 2024 FN and Dec 2024 AN.
English 1 End Term#
Of 180 End Term questions, reading comprehension gives 45 (25%). Next come verbs, tenses and modals (20) and writing: letters, articles and editing (20). The famous telephone-conversation question appears 15 times in End Terms. Papers: English 1 End Term Aug 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN and Dec 2024 AN.
Computational Thinking End Term#
CT questions are not topic-tagged on BTechi yet, so we cannot give counts. The five CT End Term papers each have 20 questions worth 100 marks, a mix of single-correct, multiple-select and numerical answers. Practise them as full papers: CT End Term Aug 2025 FN, Aug 2025 AN, Apr 2025 FN, Apr 2025 AN and Dec 2024 FN. For printable CT practice, use the CT sheets page.

A 3-week plan to use Foundation End Term PYQs#
This plan works for any Foundation course. Adjust the days to your load.
- Week 1: top topics only. Open your course's two or three biggest topics from the tables above. Do the topic sheet for each. Mark every question you got wrong.
- Week 1, end: most repeated sheet. Do the course's most repeated sheet. These are the question types IITM sets again and again.
- Week 2: one full paper every two days. Sit an End Term paper in BTechi's timed exam portal. Start with the oldest (Dec 2024). Keep Aug 2025 for last.
- Week 2, each paper: review. Check the official answer key. For each wrong answer, write one line: what was the mistake? Wrong formula, wrong reading or a careless slip?
- Week 3: the newest papers. Sit the Aug 2025 FN and AN papers as a final mock, in one sitting each.
- Week 3, last days: your error list. Re-solve only the questions you got wrong. Do not start new topics.
To print questions, use each course's sheets page, such as the Maths 2 sheets and the Stats 2 sheets. Year-wise sheets also exist, such as the Maths 2 2025 sheet and the Python 2025 sheet. The PYQ sheets hub lists them all.
When you move on to the next level, the same method works. See our guide to IITM BS diploma PYQs and important topics. For the full PYQ library across all levels, read IIT Madras BS data science PYQ: every paper, by level.
Frequently asked questions#
Where can I download IITM BS Foundation end term PYQ PDF for free?#
BTechi gives every End Term paper as an online paper with the official answer key, plus printable question sheets. Open your course from the Foundation PYQ page, then use the paper page to practise online or the sheets page to print.
Which Foundation End Term PYQs are available for Maths 2, Stats 2, Python and English 2?#
Maths 2 and Python have 6 End Term papers each (Dec 2024, Apr 2025 and Aug 2025, FN and AN). Stats 2 has 5 and English 2 has 4. Each course also has at least one quiz paper. The full list is on each course page, for example Maths 2 PYQs.
What are the most important topics for the Maths 2 End Term?#
In BTechi's tagged papers, partial and directional derivatives (41 questions) and critical points with the Hessian test (31) lead by far. Together they are 38% of End Term questions.
Are End Term questions repeated from previous years?#
The same question types repeat often, for example the Hessian test in Maths 2 or the Beta posterior in Stats 2. In BTechi's papers, a repeat is usually the same type with new numbers, often in the FN and AN sessions of the same exam. Practise the type, not the answer.
Is the Foundation End Term harder than the qualifier?#
It covers more. The qualifier tests weeks 1 to 4. The End Term tests all 12 weeks, and in Maths 1 and Stats 1 most questions come from weeks 5 to 12.
Do quiz papers help for the End Term?#
Yes, for the first half of the course. Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 papers are good topic practice. But the End Term weights the later weeks more, so do not rely on quiz papers alone.
