Applications for the IIT Madras BS January 2027 qualifier are open, and the last date to apply is 29 January 2027. That date appears on both the BS in Management and Data Science and the BS in Data Science and Applications admission pages. If you apply in this cycle, you'll study four weeks of qualifier coursework and sit the qualifier exam, which, going by the pattern of the September 2026 cycle, should fall in roughly February–March 2027. If you qualify, your first Foundation courses begin in the May 2027 term.
This post covers everything you need to act on that: what's confirmed and what isn't yet, how the term naming works (it confuses almost everyone), fees and documents, a step-by-step application walkthrough, and a month-by-month plan from now until the exam. We'll update it as IIT Madras publishes the full January 2027 calendar.
If you're new to the programme, read our complete guide to the IIT Madras BS degree first, and our qualifier exam guide for how to prepare.
Key dates for the January 2027 cycle#
Why "January 2027" doesn't mean you start in January#
This is the single most common confusion about IITM BS admissions, so it's worth a minute.
IIT Madras runs three terms a year, starting in January, May and September. The qualifier process runs inside a term, and Foundation courses begin in the next term. The September 2026 cycle makes the pattern clear:
Apply the same logic to the January 2027 cycle: applications close on 29 January, qualifier coursework follows in February, the exam comes after the four weeks, and Foundation courses start in the May 2027 term.
So if your goal was to start Foundation courses in January 2027, that was the September 2026 cycle, which has closed. If you apply now, you're aiming for May 2027. That's not a bad thing: it gives you more time to prepare.
Which programme should you apply to?#
The January 2027 deadline is the same for both data programmes, and so are the qualifier courses and cut-offs. What differs is everything after Foundation:
If you're interested in how businesses use data to decide things, Management and Data Science is likely the better fit. If you want to build software and machine-learning systems, Data Science is. Our detailed comparison, Management and Data Science vs Data Science, walks through the decision with examples.
You can only be enrolled in one non-campus IITM BS programme at a time, so choose deliberately.
Am I eligible?#
From the official admissions pages:
- You've passed Class 12 or equivalent, in any stream, at any age. You can apply.
- You're in Class 12 (you've finished your Class 11 final exams). You can apply and take the qualifier, but you can't register for Foundation courses until you've passed Class 12. Your qualifier pass stays valid for six terms.
- You're expected to have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10.
- If you were eligible to appear for JEE Advanced (the Management and Data Science page lists 2025 or 2026), you can use direct entry and skip the qualifier.
A special note for Class 12 students#
If you're in Class 12 right now, look carefully at the calendar before applying to this cycle. The January 2027 qualifier weeks and exam are expected to fall in February–March 2027, which is exactly when most school boards hold their Class 12 exams.
You have three reasonable options:
- Apply now anyway if your board timetable leaves room and you're confident you can handle both. The qualifier content overlaps with board maths (sets, functions, straight lines, quadratics), so the work isn't entirely extra.
- Wait for the May 2027 cycle, when your boards are over and you can give the qualifier your full attention. You'd still be ready for Foundation courses in the September 2027 term.
- Check JEE Advanced eligibility. If you're eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, direct entry may be simpler.
Our honest view: board exams matter more for most students' immediate future. Don't put them at risk for a qualifier you can take three months later.
What it costs#
Application fee#
There's an extra exam facilitation fee if you take the qualifier exam outside India. The application fee isn't refundable, even if you miss the exam.
What comes after#
Once you qualify, you pay per course, only for what you register for each term. For the Management and Data Science programme, Foundation courses cost ₹1,500 per credit, about ₹6,000 for a typical four-credit course, and the whole Foundation level is ₹48,000 before waivers. The Data Science programme's Foundation level is also ₹48,000 under the fee structure that applies from the January 2026 term.
Fee waivers of 50% or 75% are available based on category and family income. Our complete guide has the full waiver table and the documents you'll need.
The qualifier cut-offs for January 2027#
These are the same on both programme pages for the January 2027 batch.
The rule that catches people is the per-course minimum. You must clear it in every course, not just on average. A brilliant 70% average with 38% in one course doesn't qualify. Our qualifier guide shows exactly how to prepare around that.
Documents to keep ready#
Two practical tips. First, resize images before you open the form; most upload errors are file-size errors. Free tools on your phone can compress a photo to under 150 KB. Second, check that your category certificate is current and in your name exactly as it appears on your ID; mismatched spellings cause delays at verification.
Later, when you register for Foundation courses, you'll also upload one of: your Class 12 mark sheet, a degree certificate or your highest education certificate. Verification takes up to three weeks.
How to apply, step by step#
- Decide your programme (Management and Data Science or Data Science and Applications). You can't apply to both at once.
- Open the official programme site at study.iitm.ac.in and use the Apply now button for your programme. Be careful with look-alike sites; the official domain is iitm.ac.in.
- Register with a personal email address you'll keep for years. The FAQ notes that the personal email used for the application can't be changed later.
- Fill in your details exactly as they appear on your ID. You can edit the application until you pay the fee; after that, corrections become difficult.
- Choose your exam cities. You'll pick two preferences, in order. Choose cities you can reach early in the morning without a risky commute. You can change them up to four weeks before the qualifier exam.
- Upload documents in the formats and sizes above.
- Pay the application fee online. The FAQ lists credit card, netbanking, wallet and UPI; debit cards aren't accepted. Wait for the confirmation email from the payment gateway.
- Save everything: your application number, payment confirmation and a PDF of the submitted form.
- Watch your email and dashboard for the qualifier start date and course access.
- Start week 1 the day it opens. Assignments from week 1 count towards Gate 1.
What's new for 2027 applicants#
A few things make this cycle different from what older blog posts and videos describe.
A new programme is in the mix. The BS in Management and Data Science was launched in February 2026, run by IIT Madras's Department of Management Studies. Many guides online still describe only the Data Science programme, so if you're reading older material, check which programme it's about.
The Data Science fee structure changed. From the January 2026 term, the Data Science programme lists a revised fee structure (₹48,000 for Foundation; ₹3,86,000–₹4,50,000 for the full BS). Learners who joined up to September 2025 follow the older structure. Fee figures in pre-2026 articles may be out of date.
The degree ladder is longer. The Data Science programme now lists optional continuations beyond the BS: a PG Diploma in AI & ML (162 credits) and an MTech in AI & ML (182 credits).
AI is part of the curriculum. Management and Data Science includes GenAI for Business as a Degree-level core course, with electives such as Economics of AI and Responsible AI. The Data Science programme's diploma includes a track in Deep Learning and Generative AI. That reflects what employers are asking for: we've written about how AI is changing analyst roles.
A month-by-month plan from now#
You have more time than the deadline suggests. Here's how to use it, assuming you apply well before 29 January and the qualifier begins in early February.
October–November 2026: decide and get comfortable#
- Read the curriculum of both data programmes and decide which you're applying to.
- If you haven't done maths since Class 10, spend 30 minutes a day on algebra: linear equations, factorising, the quadratic formula, and coordinate geometry basics.
- Read one English editorial a day, noting unfamiliar words and phrases.
December 2026: preview the qualifier#
- Read BTechi's cheat notes for all four qualifier courses once, slowly. Don't memorise; just notice what feels hard.
- Attempt one previous-year qualifier paper untimed. Score it by course and write down your weakest one.
- Practise tracing simple step-by-step procedures on paper for CT.
January 2027: apply and warm up#
- Apply in the first half of the month, not on the 29th.
- Sort out logistics: a quiet study slot every day, a notebook per course, your exam city choices.
- Spend extra time on your weakest course from December's practice paper.
February–March 2027: the qualifier weeks#
- Follow the week-by-week plan in our qualifier exam guide: watch, practise, submit, review, every week.
- Aim for 80%+ on assignments so a bad week doesn't threaten Gate 1.
- In week 4, sit full timed mocks such as BTechi's mock qualifiers.
April–May 2027: register and start#
- Once you've qualified, register for Foundation courses for the May 2027 term.
- If you're also in college or working, start with two courses, not four.
- Use the gap to start a skill that'll matter later, such as Python for data analysis or Excel for business.
Mistakes to avoid this cycle#
- Applying on the last day. Websites slow down near deadlines, payments fail, and documents get rejected for size. Apply early.
- Assuming you'll start in January. You'll start Foundation in the May 2027 term if you qualify in this cycle. Plan college, work and travel accordingly.
- Using an email you'll lose. A college email that expires, or a parent's email, causes problems for years. Use your own long-term personal address.
- Choosing exam cities casually. Quiz and exam days are fixed, early, and in person. Pick cities you can reach reliably.
- Ignoring the Class 12 board clash. If you're in school, compare the board timetable with the expected qualifier dates before you pay.
- Trusting old fee figures. Check the current official fee pages; several older articles predate the 2026 changes.
- Joining unofficial "admission help" groups that ask for money. The official FAQ is clear that there are no official WhatsApp or Telegram groups. Applications are made only on the official site.
After you've applied#
Once you've submitted and paid:
- Look for your confirmation email and keep your application number handy.
- Check your dashboard regularly for course access and qualifier announcements.
- Bookmark the support contact for your programme. For the Management and Data Science programme, the official contact is support-mg@study.iitm.ac.in, with a helpline listed on the programme page (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm).
- Start preparing, if you haven't already. The four qualifier weeks move fast.
